She visited every doctor, specialist, and tutor she could find until she heard that magical word: diagnosis. Now that she and her family have found the source of her son’s frustration—a reading-based learning disability—they can establish a strategy for accommodating his learning style, such as incorporating text-to-speech or other educational…See More

Nominate a UK College or University for their Chance to Win the Intel® Reader

The inspiration for the Intel® Reader began in a university. When Ben Foss, leader of the Intel Reader development team, was a student he quickly became frustrated by the lack of accessible texts for those with reading-based learning difficulties such as dyslexia and for those with blindness or low vision. Years later, his inspiration would become a reality with the invention of the Intel Reader, the mobile assistive technology device that converts pictures of…See More

A Man From a Place Called Dyslexia

When Ben Foss was in second grade, long before he dreamed up a device that would take a picture of text and read that text aloud, and long before he graduated from Stanford with an MBA and a law degree, his mom was called into school and invited to sit at a desk with a big box of tissues. The school counselor told his mom that her son was dyslexic. “They thought she was going to burst into tears,” Foss says now. Instead, his mother said, “Yeah, I thought so.” When he explains dyslexia to…See More

A Mom’s Diary: There Really Are No Accidents

[Originally posted September 7, 2010] So the jitters this week before school starts have really taken hold of me. A new school year is like jumping into a new relationship. You have high hopes and are excited to jump in while you really don’t know the teacher–you don’t know what they know of you, you of them, and all of the other things you need to know if you have to quickly find a way to be a team. As I dropped the kids off for day one, not only did I wish for my son to have friends in his…See More

A Mom's Diary: The Dyslexia Marathon

I have spent the last five months training for my first marathon. I have never enjoyed running, never considered myself a runner, and only enjoyed running if I was chasing a soccer ball. My desire to get fit started 18 months ago with a 25 mile bike ride that led to my first sprint triathlons, century bike rides and a half marathon. All of this occurred just as my family’s adventure with dyslexia started.Heading into 2010, not only was I ramping up my dyslexia knowledge and seeing solid…See More
